Sunda Kalepa, the old port, where the distinctive Indonesian sailing boats continue to ply their trade gives the impression of stepping back in time. A recent addition to the city’s attractions includes the Taman mini Indah (beautiful Indonesia in miniature). The Central Museum has excellent exhibits displaying artefacts from the rich cultural history of the area and for displays of the local Gamelan music and dancing visit the Jakarta Arts Club. To escape the hustle and bustle of the city there are lovely views over the tea plantations from the Puncak Pass, about an hour from the centre and popular with locals at weekends or visit one of the ‘bounty’ beaches in Jakarta Bay - a world away from city life. The Kemang district of the city is the place for restaurants, nightclubs and cafés. There is great shopping here too particularly for Javanese furniture and the beautiful local Batik prints.
